The Artist's Path and Business

At six, I embarked on a voyage of creativity. Armed with seashells from a summer beach escapade, I wanted to elevate their inherent beauty. I intricately adorned over a hundred seashells using acrylics, determined to make them more captivating.

One day, during my mother's visit, my aunt stumbled upon this brilliant array of painted seashells. Her astonishment was palpable. "Maira," she exclaimed, "you should sell these at the flea market! You could make good money!" Yet, with a hint of hesitation, my mother dismissed the idea. I couldn't help but wonder why my mother was reluctant, especially when my aunt saw potential in my creations. It marked the first time I pondered the opinions of others regarding my art.

Art and Commerce: A Harmonious Union

Art and business, seemingly distinct realms, share a unique synergy. I've always believed that enhancing something's aesthetic can magnify its value. Even as a child, I found the intricacies of commerce intriguing. The objects society valued held my fascination, but above all, I revered beauty. Shiny, alluring things were coveted treasures, and as a creator of "shiny" art, I felt akin to a golden goose.

Early Recognition

In the first grade, my art professor tasked us with painting in the style of Rousseau. I embraced the challenge and executed it exceptionally well. So well my professor transformed my artwork into prints on fridge magnets, coffee cups, and various other items. I excitedly suggested we sell them, but my mother hesitated once again. I couldn't help but question why.

Nurturing the Artist's Gift

In the second grade, a new art professor recognized my talent and urged me to apply for the gifted and talented arts program at Wade Hampton High School. He had already filled out the application; my parents only needed to consent, which they did. Thus, I found myself among giants in art, exploring fields like perception, color theory, pointillism, and still-life sketches.

Navigating the Waters of Career Choices

As time passed, discussions about future careers grew more intense. My vivid imagination led me to envision various professions, from a chef one day to a private detective the next. A career that once seemed amorphous to my whims suddenly felt more concrete in high school. Although I remained uncertain about my path, I declined an opportunity to attend one of the Southeast's finest art schools, choosing instead to pursue a business education. It's a decision I don't regret, though I occasionally wonder about the untaken roads.

The Pursuit of Knowledge

My journey led me to the University of South Carolina–Columbia, where I pursued a business major in an internationally renowned program. The university attracted top students from around the globe, all seeking to bolster their resumes. A $40,000 business scholarship made my choice clear: When life presents green lights, you press the gas and let the engine roar.

The Enchantment of Money

Money held a special place in my heart. Money and art were my two passions, alongside an early but not-so-successful interest in girls. I heard people at church proclaim that money was the root of all evil, yet we needed it for practical purposes like fixing the leak in our bathroom ceiling. While I understood money's potential to disrupt lives, in my own experience, it was a force for good. My parents' hard work instilled in me a strong work ethic.

The Confluence of Art and Business

Amidst my business studies, I continued to explore art as a minor. This is where my artistic spirit thrived. Art inspired even my most technical business assignments. My presentations exuded branding finesse, my public speaking grew articulate, and my first impressions became engaging and light-hearted. Genuine friendships flourished, and fiery romances sparked. Art had become the verdant vine that adorned the walls of my life, extending its tendrils into every crevice.

Rekindling the Artistic Flame

Art was no longer confined to a hobby; it rekindled the passion I'd thought I'd left behind as a child. During the pandemic, I painted more than ever when my classes transitioned to virtual formats. I pushed the boundaries of what could be painted, experimented with new themes, and discovered the emergence of a new art movement. In those tumultuous years, I gained exponential proficiency in my craft, breaking barriers and realizing that my destiny lay in pursuing art in one form or another. Proof resided in the mesmerized expressions of those who beheld my work, not just as art but as a reflection of my essence.

A Persistent Calling

As graduation approached, art remained a steadfast presence in my life. I produced some of my finest works during that period and even began to earn money through my art. My first commission involved creating fine art dog portraits for close relatives and friends. To this day, I hold those initial sales dear as they inspire me to chase my dream of making art my sole source of income. To be fully immersed in art is my daily mission, a resolute act of conscious will that infuses every endeavor with a pursuit of beauty in this world. What other purpose could be more compelling?

The Intersection of Art and Business

Today, business and art interweave like leaves in a basket of life's offerings. There is much to explore in the business realm, and art, with its colorful light, can illuminate the path. As I pen these words, I am humbled to be a student at one of the world's most prestigious institutions, delving into the intricacies of accounting analytics while working for the largest accounting firm on the planet.

It is often said that to achieve greatness, one must first believe it's possible. I remain steadfast in that belief. My journey in the art world has only just begun, with countless blank canvases awaiting my creative touch. Equally gratifying is that my art has graced exhibitions in California, and I've had the privilege of collaborating with a multimillion-dollar artist. Like a child, I keep my thoughts nimble, never settling and deftly juggle every aspect of life gracefully.

A Vision for the Future

I can confidently say this: I envision a future where my art and business blend seamlessly to completion. Like the perfect fusion of Nesquik and whole milk, my art and business will culminate in a rich, chocolatey goodness for all to savor purely for the pleasure it brings. This future feels closer than ever, and I hope it arrives at just the right moment.
