Deloitte Art & Finance Report, 7th Edition Key Highlights:
-
Ultra-high net worth individuals' wealth associated with art and collectibles reached an estimated US $1,481 trillion in 2020. (Deloitte Art & Finance Report, 7th edition, p.33)
-
Attention has shifted towards a younger generation of artists. The market's demand for emerging artists continued through 2020 and into the first half of 2021. Auction sales at Christie’s, Sotheby's, and Phillips of artists aged 45 or below reached US$52.4 million in 2020 and surged to US$144.5 million in 2021, marking a remarkable 175.7% year-on-year increase. Interest in younger artists aligns with buying trends among millennial collectors, who were the highest spenders in 2020, with a median spend of US $228,000 compared to Gen X's median spend of US$122,000. Experts predict that this focus on a younger generation of artists will likely benefit more artists of color and young female artists who have traditionally been under-represented, particularly in the auction market. Most believe that the emphasis on youth will continue into the next year as more young collectors and buyers join the market boom, particularly from Asia. (Deloitte Art & Finance Report, 7th edition, p. 38)
-
An astounding 85% of younger collectors express the belief that blockchain technology could revolutionize how business is conducted in the art world. They also anticipate significant impacts from big data, analytics, and artificial intelligence on the art and wealth management industry in the future. This is notably higher than the 57% of older collectors who share a similar view. (Deloitte Art & Finance Report, 7th edition, p.254)
-
The art market is in dire need of rapid modernization. Transparency stands as the key to unlocking future growth in both the art and finance industry and the art market as a whole. Building trust in art market data is paramount for the further development of the art and finance industry moving forward. (Deloitte Art & Finance Report, 7th edition, p. 280)
